Chapter 13: Preparing for Trial

By the following week, the preliminary motions in the federal district court had concluded, and Judge Henderson set a firm trial date for early next month. The defense attorneys for Julian and Victoria had filed a series of desperate motions to suppress the digital evidence and freeze orders, claiming illegal search and seizure, but Vance had easily batted them down during the pre-trial hearings. Arthur Vane and I spent long hours in the secure loft above his office reviewing the prosecution's exhibit lists to ensure every financial record, bank transfer receipt, and corporate incorporation filing was properly cross-referenced. The black rolling suitcase remained locked in the office closet, its contents safely documented and cataloged as physical evidence of the initial capital flight.

The autumn air outside was turning crisp, carrying the sharp scent of damp leaves and woodsmoke from the surrounding hills. I stood by the second-story window of the loft, watching the quiet street below while holding a warm mug of tea. The constant, gnawing fear that had defined my early marriage was entirely gone, replaced by a quiet, enduring strength. Arthur walked up behind me, placing a small stack of certified copies of the updated property seizures on the oak table.

"They’ve exhausted their primary liquidity," Arthur said quietly, leaning against the edge of the desk. "The federal receivers have taken control of the suburban residence, all three commercial properties tied to Apex Logistics, and Victoria's personal investment accounts. Without those funds, their defense team is practically running on fumes."

"They believed their wealth made them untouchable," I replied, my voice steady as I turned away from the glass. "They thought a public image of success could permanently hide private cruelty and corruption."

"Well, that illusion has officially shattered," Arthur noted with a faint, supportive smile. "Vance called a few minutes ago. The trial is expected to move swiftly given the documentary proof we provided. You won't have to hide anymore, Elena. Once this concludes, your life is entirely your own to rebuild."

I looked down at the smooth wooden floor, feeling a profound sense of closure settling deep within my bones. The physical scars of my past had healed, and the legal machinery of justice was finally finishing the work I had started the day I walked down those stairs with a black suitcase in my hand.
