Chapter 9: Celeste's Counter-Move

The heavy silence of the boardroom was shattered twenty minutes later by the shrill ringing of Martin's discarded smartphone on the conference table. Neither Adrian nor I made a move to answer it as it vibrated violently against the polished wood. Martin stood slumped against the oak table, his corporate armor completely stripped away, staring at the floor in defeated silence. Adrian kept a calm, watchful eye on him while I carefully slid the master file binder back into my canvas work bag. As the phone rang for the fourth time, Martin finally reached out with a trembling hand, snatched the device, and pressed accept, putting it on speakerphone before anyone could stop him.

"Martin! What in God's name is happening?" Celeste Vance's voice erupted from the tiny speaker, sharp, frantic, and dripping with corporate panic. "The foundation accounts have just been frozen by a federal court order! The bank is demanding an immediate audit of the Delaware subsidiaries! Did you secure the physical files like I told you to?" Martin cast a pathetic, pleading glance toward Adrian before speaking into the phone, his voice hollow and broken. "It's too late, Celeste. Adrian Mercer is here. They have the master files. The vault is open."

A sharp intake of breath hissed through the phone speaker, followed by a terrifying, dead silence. When Celeste spoke again, all the theatrical elegance had vanished from her tone, replaced by venomous fury. "Listen to me very carefully, you pathetic coward," Celeste hissed, her voice cutting through the room like a razor. "If you take the fall alone, I will make sure you spend the next decade in a federal penitentiary. Blame the asset transfers on administrative error. Say Eleanor signed the proxy documents under her own free will. I have three board members ready to back up that story."

I couldn't stay silent a moment longer. I stepped around Adrian, walked right up to the glowing phone on the table, and leaned down so my voice would carry clearly through the microphone. "It won't work, Celeste," I said firmly, my voice steady and unyielding. "We have Eleanor's handwritten journals from the exact dates you claim she signed those proxy forms. She was recovering from pneumonia at a private clinic across the state, and your forged signatures don't even match her legal medical clearance."

A sharp gasp echoed from the other end of the line, followed instantly by the harsh sound of a call being abruptly disconnected. The dial tone hummed softly in the quiet boardroom, a pathetic little electronic sound marking the total collapse of Celeste's iron empire. Martin slumped completely down into one of the leather executive chairs, burying his face in his hands as his shoulders shook with impotent rage and fear. Adrian looked down at him with cold detachment, then turned his gaze toward me, offering a faint, approving nod. "The trap is closed," Adrian said quietly, adjusting his cuffs. "Now we take this directly to the full board and restore Eleanor to her rightful place."
