Chapter 4: The Midnight Breach

The house on Elm Ridge was dark when I returned shortly after midnight. The security lights flickered on as my car pulled into the circular driveway, casting long shadows across the manicured lawn. The place looked dead—a monument to a marriage built on boardroom strategy rather than human affection.

I used my own key, moving through the silent foyer with deliberate, quiet steps. The marble floors felt freezing beneath my soles. Elena was likely asleep in the master suite upstairs, or perhaps she was already at her downtown apartment, playing the role of the abandoned, worried wife to anyone who would listen.

I bypassed the main staircase and descended directly into the basement. The air down here was still cold, smelling faintly of cedar and damp stone. I walked straight to the wooden wine shelf where the hidden camera had been mounted. Using a small penknife, I pried the housing loose. Inside was a micro-SD card, untouched by the automated cloud sync that Elena’s security contractor had presumably overlooked.

I slipped the card into my pocket and moved to the corner utility closet, where the central router and local storage server were housed. Vance was right about the cloud logs; we needed the physical drive to establish an unbroken chain of custody that no defense attorney could challenge.

As I unhooked the black metal box from the wall, a blue LED light blinked on the interface. A secondary drive partition—one I didn't recognize—began flashing rapidly.

Curiosity overriding caution, I pulled my laptop from my leather satchel, connected an ethernet cable directly to the server port, and bypassed the primary admin login using a master override code I had set up during the installation.

Lines of code scrolled across my screen in green text. I navigated past the video archives into the document registry. There, hidden inside an encrypted folder labeled Foundational Assets, was a series of scanned PDF files.

I opened the first one. It was a revised amendment to the family trust, drafted six months ago, transferring full discretionary power and primary inheritance rights to Elena’s private LLC in the event of Maya’s voluntary or involuntary relinquishment of custody.
