Chapter 9: The Press Release

The afternoon news broadcast played softly on the small television set in the farmhouse kitchen, casting a restless blue glow across the scarred wooden counters. Sarah Miller’s face filled the screen, broadcasting live from the steps of the federal courthouse downtown, flanked by two representatives from the Securities and Exchange Commission. The chyron beneath her read VANGUARD FOUNDATION ASSETS FROZEN AMID FRAUD ALLEGATIONS. I stood by the sink, watching the anchor toss back to Sarah as she detailed the leaked internal memos, the suppressed structural reports, and the illegal corporate suppression of chief designer Clara Vance.

Clara sat at the kitchen table, a steaming mug of black coffee between her hands, watching her own name scroll across the national news ticker for the first time in over two years. The transformation was complete; the pale, exhausted woman locked in the subterranean cell was gone, replaced by the brilliant, indomitable architect whose work was now vindicated before millions of viewers. My phone buzzed continuously on the counter—text messages from board members, wire reporters, and federal investigators all demanding statements, but I let every single one of them ring out into the empty room.

The front door creaked open, and Mrs. Gable stepped inside from the porch, holding Lily’s small, warm hand in hers. The toddler dropped her canvas doll onto the braided rug and ran across the kitchen toward Clara, shouting happily, "Mommy!" Clara dropped to her knees, sweeping Lily up into her arms and burying her face in the curls of light brown hair, holding her so tightly that her shoulders shook with quiet, overwhelming relief. I walked over, placing a hand on Clara’s back as Lily patted her cheek with a small, comforting hand, murmuring soft words that only a two-year-old could invent.

The television in the background cut to footage of federal marshals entering the Vanguard Foundation headquarters with cardboard boxes and court-ordered warrants, escorting Julian Vance out through a phalanx of flashing camera lights. He kept his head down, his tailored suit jacket pulled tightly around him, refusing to look at the lenses as he was guided into the back of an unmarked federal vehicle. I watched him vanish into the cruiser on screen, feeling a heavy, cold weight lift off my chest for the first time since this nightmare began. The public glamour had been stripped away, leaving only the bare, undeniable truth exposed to the light.
